Cool events from the Center for Sex and Culture or Kulchah as we say in the southlands

Friday, June 13: Dr. Carol Queen presents A History of Porn, followed by a midnight screening of her clip show BEYOND BOOGIE NIGHTS
Dr. Carol Queen presents "Beyond Boogie Nights" at the Coolidge Corner Theater in Brookline. Join us for an in-store pre-party at our Brookline store, and take 15% off everything in the store! Porn in the 1970s -- its "Golden Age" -- depended more on plot and character than most porn today, and many of its directors and stars believed erotic movies would soon be a mainstream genre. It didn't happen quite that way, but many viewers love old porn for its more natural bodies, storylines, and sexual revolution flair! Good Vibrations cultural staff sexologist Dr. Carol Queen will show some of her faves and talk about the rise of explicit cinema.

$20 per person benefits the Center for Sex & Culture -- space is limited, please reserve in advance with Greggor at greggor.mattson@gmail.com

We'll start at the Ferry Building and end at Powell St. BART -- 1pm--5pm, inclusive of a 1-hour lunch stop at the San Francisco Brewing Company

Saturday June 21 5:30 pm -- WRANGLER: ANATOMY OF AN ICON

Center for Sex and Culture co-presents Wrangler at Frameline32, the 32nd San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival.

There have been dozens of gay porn stars, but only one Jack Wrangler. Bursting onto the scene in the early ’70s, he wasn’t the typical obscure object of desire but a full-bodied, self-confident stud. Buff, masculine and clearly comfortable in his own skin, Wrangler was more than just a hot guy to fantasize about — he was a role model. With a screen persona that blended virility with a sly eye for fun, Wrangler was the first out actor to show how a gay man could be strong, secure and lustful. In this entertaining oral history of the ground-breaking ’70s, the self-aware (and self-deprecating) Wrangler describes his journey from skinny Beverly Hills brat (his hard-to-please father was a production exec on “Bonanza”) to aspiring actor to a brand name with a product line (Accu-Jac, anyone?). Fans from Chi Chi La Rue to Marc Shaiman to Bruce Vilanch drop by to recall the heady days of gay movie houses and to sing Jack’s praises. Rounding out the package are a wealth of clips of Wra
ngler strutting his stuff in vintage films. Proving that there are second —and third—acts in American life, Wrangler successfully made the jump to straight porn and, in recent years, established himself as a serious director of legit theater. The most surprising turn in Wrangler’s iconoclastic life, however, was meeting and wooing songbird Margaret Whiting. Creative and vital, and as unconcerned as ever with the limits others would place on him, Jack Wrangler is still a role model.

Tickets will go on sale Friday May 23 for Frameline members, and Friday May 30 for the general public.

Through June 22nd: Art by Terry Furry at the Polk Street Gallery

Good Vibrations is proud to present Terry Furry in our Polk Street Gallery. Join the artist and friends for a special reception of the artist's erotic figure paintings. Terry explains: "My focus at this time is on closely cropped details of the body, depicting a sensuous, erotic nature of man. The Panels in this current exhibition show this close viewpoint of a cropped moment in time where the viewer is an intruder on a private and intimate moment. I love contradiction in my work; the contradiction of a red drawn graphic line producing realism in relation of the modeled form, the contradiction of cloth sometimes feeling more life than that of flesh..."

THIS IS THE THING by Kirk Read

music by Jeffrey Alphonsus Mooney
video by Liz Singer
props and design by Doug Hansen and Kirk Read

at the Garage, 975 Howard @ 6th Street
June 10-14, 2008 Tuesday through Saturday, 8pm

Tickets: $12-15, 1-800-838-3006

Writer/performer Kirk Read creates an evening of stories about sex work, hallucinations and the apocalypse. Read learned to perform in a touring Virginia evangelical youth group, with some in his hometown expecting him to become a preacher. Instead, Read became an escort and an avowed fan of magic mushrooms. In short, Read is a different sort of preacher. Read's stories weave in and out of Jeffrey Alphonsus Mooney's soundscape, creating an atmosphere of magical trance. Read's humor and acute observation, together with Mooney's trippy, layered music and Liz Singer's shimmering video installation, will take you to church. Expect to hear stories about a 450 pound sex work client, people with dietary restrictions, the Brady Bunch and touring through rural Alabama with genius strippers.

I am making a show program, so if you have a business or skill that you'd like to advertise, please contact me. I'm happy to trade ad space for money (sliding scale) or barter. I'll also need volunteers to pass out flyers and possibly other things, like helping work the door and pre-production errands, etc. Get in touch if you want to help: kirkread@earthlink.net / 415-722-0828

Please forward this widely and wildly!

Introducing the Flesh & Spirit women's community! Expannd your eperience of sex and spirit in a safe, sacred, playful environment. We'll use practice from Tantra and other traditions to bring sex and spirit together where they belong: in the sanctity of our bodies.

Sex is the Magic!
You shouldn't be trapped in the world of matter,
Even if you are of the world of matter.
You shouldn't be trapped in the world of spirit,
Even if your spirit flies free like a bird.
The visible and invisible realms are there to
celebrate one another.
In sex they love each other,
make love with each other, through each other.
Sex is given to honor spirit and matter and all of their
children with passion and compassion in equal celebration.
Isa Magdalena

Why Consider This Workshop?
You are totally comfortable with your body, your sex life, your kinky/vanilla/poly/monogamous/celibate choices BUT don’t feel like you have much of a connection to Spirit OR
Your spiritual life is great, but you’ve lost touch with your erotic nature OR
Your experience of flesh and spirit is already magical and you want to spend a weekend with other women who are interested in living in the power of this connection.
Touch will be an important vehicle for our learning.
Each woman will determine her own pace, according to her own erotic truth.

Isa Magdalena, first leader of Body Electric women’s workshops and author of the breakthrough book Libido, Where Sex, Science and Spirit Meet, has been a sex-worker-coach-pioneer-teacher since the early 90s. Isa is a lifelong student of the sexual and the mystical. Her workshops weave together the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.
About Flesh & Spirit Women's Community
We are very excited about this workshop which launches the Flesh and Spirit Women’s Community. It is our intention to create community which supports women in the celebrating all of who we are and especially in the integration of Spirit and the Erotic. Envision with us formal and informal ways of creating community: workshops(including the Peaceful Warrier, Lover, Elder, Sacred Prostitute), potlucks, Reiki, rituals, and other activities yet to be created.
